Why convert CUT to PNG?
CUT is the bitmap format of Media Cybernetics' Dr. Halo paint program for DOS, used in early PC graphics and clip art collections. The picture is decoded by ImageMagick at its original pixel size, keeping the artwork exactly as it was drawn.
PNG keeps every pixel exactly as rendered, so text, thin lines and flat colours stay crisp, and transparency is preserved.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert CUT to PNG?
Drop your CUT file above and press Convert. Our servers decode the CUT image with ImageMagick's Dr. Halo reader into a lossless PNG, then encode it in the format you chose. The result is saved as a lossless PNG, ready to download.
What does a CUT file hold that ends up in the PNG?
A single run-length encoded bitmap. ImageMagick's Dr. Halo decoder unpacks it, and that picture fills the PNG.
Which programs produced the CUT images that convert to PNG?
Dr. Halo, the DOS paint program from Media Cybernetics, and software that shipped its image libraries, such as early PC clip art collections and scanner utilities.
How big is the PNG image from a CUT file?
The PNG keeps the original pixel size of the Dr. Halo picture.
Why is PNG a good fit for a CUT conversion?
PNG is lossless: the image keeps every rendered pixel with no compression artefacts, which keeps small text, table lines and drawings perfectly sharp.
