Why convert CUT to GIF?
CUT is the bitmap format of Media Cybernetics' Dr. Halo paint program for DOS, used in early PC graphics and clip art collections. The picture is decoded by ImageMagick at its original pixel size, keeping the artwork exactly as it was drawn.
GIF stores the image with an optimised palette of up to 256 colours, which suits text, diagrams and flat colour.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert CUT to GIF?
Drop your CUT file above and press Convert. Our servers decode the CUT image with ImageMagick's Dr. Halo reader into a lossless PNG, then encode it in the format you chose. The result is saved as a GIF image, ready to download.
What does a CUT file hold that ends up in the GIF?
A single run-length encoded bitmap. ImageMagick's Dr. Halo decoder unpacks it, and that picture fills the GIF.
Which programs produced the CUT images that convert to GIF?
Dr. Halo, the DOS paint program from Media Cybernetics, and software that shipped its image libraries, such as early PC clip art collections and scanner utilities.
How big is the GIF image from a CUT file?
The GIF keeps the original pixel size of the Dr. Halo picture.
How are colours handled in the CUT to GIF image?
GIF uses a palette of up to 256 colours. The converter builds an optimised palette from the rendered image, which keeps text, lines and solid colours clean.
