Why convert WDP to HEIC?
WDP is the Windows Media Photo and HD Photo extension for JPEG XR images, found in Windows Photo Gallery libraries and Microsoft imaging tools. The photo is decoded with the JPEG XR reference decoder at its full width and height, with its colours and detail carried into the image.
HEIC uses High Efficiency Image Coding, the format iPhones and iPads save photos in, so the image is compact while staying sharp.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert WDP to HEIC?
Drop your WDP file above and press Convert. Our servers decode the HD Photo data with Microsoft's reference JxrDecApp decoder into a lossless PNG, then encode that picture in the format you chose. The result is saved as a HEIC image, ready to download.
Which program reads the HD Photo data in a WDP file for the HEIC?
JxrDecApp, the reference decoder from Microsoft's open-source jxrlib. It decodes the picture losslessly, and that decoded image becomes the HEIC.
How does a WDP file relate to JXR when it becomes a HEIC?
WDP and JXR hold the same JPEG XR format under different extensions, so both are decoded in exactly the same way and produce the same HEIC.
How big is the HEIC image from a WDP file?
The image keeps the full pixel dimensions of the WDP photo.
How compact is the HEIC made from a WDP file?
HEIC uses High Efficiency Image Coding, which typically needs about half the space of a JPG of similar quality, so even detailed pages stay small.
