What Is 16:9 Aspect Ratio?

The 16:9 aspect ratio is a widescreen format that is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. It became the global standard for video and displays because it closely matches how human eyes naturally see - wider than tall - and fits comfortably on modern screens without black bars.

Almost every TV, monitor, laptop screen, and YouTube video uses 16:9 today. It replaced the old 4:3 format used by box televisions, and it remains the default export ratio for most cameras and video editing software.

16:9 vs Other Ratios

16:9 sits between the old boxy TV format and today's ultra-wide cinematic look. Here is how it compares:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 16:9 the standard for video?expand_more
16:9 closely matches natural human eyesight and became the broadcast standard in the early 2000s as TVs shifted from boxy 4:3 screens to widescreen. Every major platform, from YouTube to Netflix, now defaults to it.
What resolution should I use for YouTube?expand_more
YouTube recommends uploading at 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) at minimum, with 3840 x 2160 (4K) for the best quality if your source footage supports it. Thumbnails should be 1280 x 720.
Is 16:9 the same as widescreen?expand_more
Yes. 'Widescreen' generally refers to 16:9, which replaced the older 4:3 'standard' TV format. Some cinema releases use even wider ratios like 21:9, but 16:9 is the consumer widescreen standard.
Can I convert a 4:3 video to 16:9?expand_more
You can, but it usually means adding black bars on the sides or cropping the top and bottom of the original frame, since the two ratios don't share the same shape.
What is the pixel size for a 4K 16:9 image?expand_more
4K at 16:9 is 3840 x 2160 pixels, sometimes called 2160p or UHD. It has exactly four times the pixel count of Full HD (1920 x 1080).
What image formats can I upload?expand_more
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and HEIC (the format iPhones save photos in) up to 50MB. HEIC files are decoded right in your browser, so nothing is ever uploaded to a server - the same as every other format here.
